In continuous ink jet technology, ink continuously streams through the system, but only prints when motioned to do so. Ink is strapped by air pressure from an ink cylinder to the printhead. The pressurized ink then arrives in the nozzle, where the pipe carrying the ink passes through a ceramic ring. Pulsates of electricity are sent to this loop from the control board. The piezoelectric crystal in the ring contracts with every pulse of electricity, clasping the tube. These rapid squeezes create a wave action in the ink. The wave action triggers the ink to break into drops presently after it leaves the spout opening and enters the charge tunnel.

The destination of every single ink droplets is determined by the control panel inside the small character CIJ printer. When a droplet breaks from the ink torrent, a positive voltage is applied to the charge passageway. This gives the drop a negative charge as it splits in the tunnel. Characters are created in a dot matrix format with several dots crafting a single character.
